In the highlands of Ecuador farmers must save their own corn seeds as there are no commercial varieties available to them. Weevils and other storage insects can cause significant damage to the stored maize seeds. We are working with farmers to help them understand the biology of stored grain insects of maize and how they can be controlled without the use of pesticides. Currently we are working with two villages and are demonstrating how hermetically sealed bags can be used to kill insects that are already in the grain and stop new infestations.
